I have a Maytag Neptune stacked washer & dryer. New 1999. A 2000 series electric and gas pair.
The dryer is flawless, but the washer has developed a grinding noise during the spin cycle. Obviously a bearing.
Had the "Maytag man" check it out. He confirms a bad bearing, possibly the shaft, too. Recommends replacement instead of repair (estimate $1100.00!)
He says Maytag, Amana, Hoover, Jen-Air and Magic Chef are now owned by Whirlpool and I should look to Speed Queen, GE or Bosch, And since the Neptune is permanently stacked I can't just replace the Washer. Is this all true? Any suggestions? Thanks! |

** Is this all true? **
All? No.
Whirlpool does not own Hoover.
If whatever model you have is Maytag's 'super stacker', no it can not be unstacked and either machine used separately.
Whether you should look at Speed Queen, GE or Bosch will be up to you. GE's latest front-load washer design is fairly new to the market place. I'm not sure I would buy one myself. I haven't seen any repair frequency histories for either Bosch or Speed Queen domestic washers to know how they stand up. Maybe check Consumer Reports.
