I'm looking to do some major remodeling on my house, but I'm not sure where to start. Do I look for an architect or will a general contractor be able to do everything (design through finish)?

1st, what needs to be done? Remodel, or everything. Start with the major stuff. Roof (if needed), etc. I'm a contractor and have done it both ways. I design decks, and baths, kitchens, but most of this is not a major structural change. If you are looking to do an addition of raise the roof etc. get a designer. Major projects like that, for me, cost me $ to design, not make me $. Decks, baths and kitchens are easier. Usually you are just fitting in new fixtures and such.

Well, I'm starting with remodeling the bathrooms, but I need to re-do the kitchen as well and I'm also thinking of adding on a room or two. My main problem is I'm extremely design challenged. I have general ideas as to what I want, but can't really picture the finished product.

Make a detailed scale drawing of the floor plans showing where current plumbing is located. Take this to both Home Depot & that other home center they won't let us mention here and let them help you design the spaces. You will need some ideas to tell them but their computer programs are great. Biggest problem will be selecting cabinets. They will educate you on types available thru them.
