Which flooring will add to resale value? |

I'm torn between installing a real wood floor or a laminate (like Pergo) in my living room/dining room area. On the one hand I like the look and feel of real wood, I like the "character" it develops over time, on the other hand I like saving money !
Does it make a difference when I sell the home?Is real wood more appealing?

Flooring and resale... |

Hi Julie,
My opinion is that wood would be worth it, esp. if you plan on living in the house several years. If you're doing a 'fix and flip' then maybe wood's not worth doing. But (resale value aside), wood would be (I think) more enjoyable during the years you're in the home. That (your enjoyment at home) is a form of investment as well.
I should mention that I'm a big fan of wood but not such laminates. I've actually been thinking of putting down bamboo flooring in our bedroom. It comes prefinished, is stable, hard wearing, beautiful, and surprisingly inexpensive.

Hi again Julie,
A couple things I might add on to my previous post:
As I've said numerous times on this BBS, don't expect a one-to-one relationship between an improvement and resale value added by that improvement. There are just so many factors in resale value....not the least of which is the kind of market you go to sell in.
Also, another thing about bamboo flooring: it's from a renewable source! It's just a variant of grass, basically. You're not cutting down a rainforest to put down your floor.
