Window A/C Winter Care

12/07/2002 08:54 AM missm

I have a window air conditioner that will be hard to store if I take it out of the window for the winter. Will it suffer any damage from the elements (I live in NJ near NYC) if I simply cover the exposed portion with an air conditioner cover? The exposed portion is in the window on my front porch, so it doesn't get the full brunt of the weather, but it's already a colder winter than last one this year! Thanks, MissM

It should not be harmed by leaving it in the window. You may want to install some of the clear heat-shrink film over the interior side to stop any drafts that may still go through it though.

BTW. Air conditioners should be professionally cleaned every 3 years or every year if you live in a high traffic area to keep it running as well as possible while using the least amount of energy. It would have to be removed for that service which is least expensive to have done in off-peak times like Spring or Fall.
