You should not have to do anything but move precious breakables out of the way, if you get your wood floors done. Most firms take care of the rest, even moving couches and such.
Money is definitely an issue for everyone with the economy and all, but if you can afford to get the floors redone, it is definitely worth it.
We have had our floors redone in two homes - the most recent nine years ago, and the floors still look great!
