adding step size

Could anybody help me. I have a main floor that is wood and the step goes into my Family room it is Carpeted,their is only one step. I would like to add 3-4 inches because I have had people fall or slip from this.

ahh where is the step? attached to the wood floor? actually a brief thought you could get rid of the carpet and build a wooden step.

The step is carpet that is in family room the wood floor is Pergo that is the step up from the family room . I talked to the last owners of the house and they said the step is wood so I see no reason to just knock that step out and make a whole new one .Thanks for replying I appricate it.
