Hi,
I would like to remove a very old carpet in my den that has asbestos floor tile (10% chrysotile) underneath it. Is there a way to remove the carpet, leave the tile intact and find a suitable floor to replace it (linoleum, wood) etc? I got an estimate from an environmentally friendly contractor that to have a professional carpet/asbestos tile removal would run approx. $1500 -not including the new floor and intstallation. (This isn't something I feel comfortable doing myself.)
Can the carpet be removed without disturbing the tile - or is that the 1 million dollar question? I have a small budget to work with, but have a child who is environmentally sensitive. Please help.

My apologies for not seeing your post earlier. This project does not post a health hazard unless the tile is in a pulverized or broken condition that it can generate dust. Even when broken, asbestos-containing floor tile encapsulates the asbestos fiber in an asphalt or vinyl matrix that makes it a relatively large particle and unlikely to reach the breathing zone.

You have nothing to fear from your project as described.
