We are building a new home and are considering installing a whole house fan. What are the pros & cons to these whole house fans? Why are they not used in newer homes? What is your professional opinion?
Will this fan work in a 2 story house?

Hopefully you'll receive a few responses from others in various parts of the country as an attic fan may not suit everyones needs.
Here in the northeast,even during the hottest days of summer we have cool evenings.The attic fan can lower our house temperature to the outdoor temp. in about 15 or twenty minutes,not to mention changing stale air.We usually run ours between May and September.There might be one or two days during the summer when I wish I had air conditioning but thats a personal preference.The fan is very low maintenance since there is only a fan,belt,and motor.If you are not one who gets excited about AC then I would recommend the attic fan.

I'm with Matches. Attic fans can be a great cost saver and can add to your comfort level during certain times of the year. I had one in my last house and would like to put one in my present house but don't have a good place for it. If you want one in your new house, you should plan where it will be and talk to the contractor. If you don't plan ahead, the best place for the fan might be covered by something that doesn't have to be in that exact spot in the attic.
Also, make sure the louvre (sp?) that opens and closes is of good quality that will not allow a draft when not in use.
Another thing - it's nice to put a timer on it so you can go away and let it run for an hour to cool down the house in the evening and then shut off by itself. Or you can go to bed and let it shut off later.
