bleach to clean vinyl-asbestos tile ok?

08/12/2005 01:50 PM profnmore

My house was built in 1941. I believe the finished part of my basement has vinyl asbestos tile underneath commercial grade carpet. Unfortunately, my aging cat has just soiled parts of that carpet, so I want to remove it and clean the tile, before putting down new carpet. Can I clean the vinyl asbestos tile with bleach? Is there anything else that would be more effective (and safe) to clean up cat urine odor from this tile? I also have some Nature's Miracle natural enzyme cleaner for cat odor -- is that safe to use on the asbestos tile?
Thank you

The VAT will not be affected by chlorine bleach or other liquids. Chlorine basically cleans and deoderizes because it is an oxidant. Hydrogen peroxide is usually just as effective but does not leave behind the strong chlorine smell. I would try that first.

The only hazard is from activities that could pulverize or abrade. I don't know what will work best to eliminate the odor, but any wet cleaning technique, including the enzyme cleaner, should be safe. Tried sodium bicarbonate (baking soda)?
