Any suggestions on how to reduce ice damming problems in a cathedral ceiling? Will I need to re-do the roof to install sofit vents, baffles along the rafters, and ridge vents? The 15-year old log home has a 25 ft cathedral ceiling with exposed log rafters. From the blueprints, insulation was installed in the space between the interior pine finish boards and the metal roof. The ice damming is particularly bad directly above the wood stove (no surprise).

Primary source of heatloss that causes ice damming is air leakage into the attic. Solve this, you solve your problem.

DO NOT ADD MORE VENTS W?O FIXING THE LEAKAGE!! This will only draw more hot air into your ceiling.

Determining were it's leaking is given to a lot of variables. Is it T&G Ceiling? If so, was an air tight barrier (like poly) put above it? Is the fireplace built in? was the ceiling of the fireplace chase sealed air-tight (Fiberglass doesn't count)? Is the cathedral ceiling accessable to fix? Is it rafters, parallel cord truss or scissors truss?

If things are not done right the first time, sometimes it's difficult (Or expensive to solve).

Cathedral ceiling means there is no attic.
