cedar shingle roofing

07/08/2003 09:36 AM swc56

Hello:

I have a cedar shingle roof that is 5 years old. Recently a company approached me about them applying a treatment to the shingles that supposedly will increase the life time of the roof.

Is this a necessary step or just a sales pitch. The preservative was a parrafin based material and looks great but I am not sure it will actually do any good or even last very long.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Steve

You do not want a product that is parafin based as it will not last long at all. The FLOOD Company has a good product for a cedar roof and i have seen it last up to several years before needing to be redone. I feel that a cedar roof does need to be sealed and cleaned every few years as the ones that have been done in my area look much better than thoes that have not been sealed.

There's diff opinions about sealing cedar roofs but a parafin (wax) based will oxidize anmd be gone in six months. Forget that one, probably worth a tenth of what they want.
