My husband and I are buying our first home- a brick detached house on a long and narrow lot, built in 1920 in a quiet but urban neighborhood. The living room leads to the dining room which leads to the kitchen in a "railroad" style layout through archways and every room is visible from anywhere in the house. I want to chose kitchen cabinets that will "flow" not clash with the rest of the home. The hardwood floors need refinishing and I am thinking of staining them a dark shade of brown or burgundy, like mahogany or walnut maybe. So should I choose light cabinets or medium-stained? I really like a color called "Cider" or "Paprika" which gives maple cabinets a Pinkish tint, rather than that commom golden honey tint. Also, should I go for a light ceramic tile floor in the kitchen next to the dark dining room floor? Our decorating style is still somewhat undefined-or maybe just eclectic. We prefer more traditional than contemporary, yet more modern than country... if that makes sense. We like natural/nuetral colors and textures like linens and leather, stone and wood. I have chosen a leather sofa with big rolled arms in a dark brown. I have several framed watercolor maps on parchment of Caribbean islands where my heart is always, lots of framed photos of loved ones in Black and white (photography is a hobby and I have a darkroom). So please give me some feedback or input or advice- i'm beginning to feel overwhelmed at all the choices... Thanks!
