Is it possible to have a down draft gas range or only a hood. I have never lived in a place with an effective ventalating system for the range. Sick of grilling, any advice?

I'm not sure what your question is. You can have either a downdraft or a hood, you shouldn't have both. I think all the models that have a grill option will be a downdraft but I could be wrong.

Whichever way you go, make sure either can be vented properly to the outdoors. Long vent runs and/or lots of elbows will reduce the amount of air that can be exhausted (possibly to the point of being useless).

Check the installation specifications for the ducting before making your purchase to ensure it can be installed adequately.

Down drafts are inefficient. A good sized hood vented to the outside is preferred. be sure your hood has sufficient cubic feet per minute (CFM) and is not too noisy (should not exceed 3 sones). The hood itself must extend far enough over the range to collect the vapors/odors. Some hood slide out when in use to provide better coverage.
