What does the ceiling edge attach to when the wall is between joists?

the drywall on the walls is what holds up the ceiling drywall between joists. some retro applications where they don't remove the drywall from the walls and just do the ceiling,,,, they add crown molding to hold the ceiling drywall up without chance of cracking the corners later.
