The electric water heater in this house has had to be replaced every six years. I do at least a partial drain twice a year. I was thinking of getting one of the salt-free water softner systems hoping this would prolong the life of the water heater.

The water company says there are 8 grains of hardness in our water.

What steps should I take that would help avoid having to replace the water heater every six years?
