Power Tools

04/03/2008 02:43 PM CMiddleton

What we need stinking power tools for this project...here in the midwest everything is about 15 to 20 years to behind the coast. What are power tools? I thought we were do'in very thing by hand just like the master of the past...right Neil...ha,ha

I believe that if the old master had access to a festools they would have used them to increase their production. So Neil break-out that tablesaw, circular saw and whatever has a power cord on it.

great chop chopin on dovetails!

04/03/2008 04:13 PM romessina

wow Dave, they sure look nice your dovetails! Bravo!

Neil, did you try to cut to length with a cross-cut saw? (or it's my poor English and I totally missed the sense of the phrase?!?!)

personally, I really enjoy working by hand, but after resawing a 10x18x1 board by hand... my next investment is surely a bandsaw! (took me more than 4h to do it with a ryoba; I was really proud and my shoulders kept reminding me about it for a whole week)
Old masters would have used power (except the masochists :p)
It's nice that now we have a choice!

and as soon as things are sorted out around here, I will pledge to do mine (unplugged, of course ;).

we don't need no stink'un Cross Cut saw

04/03/2008 07:23 PM NLamens

Hey Rondo.......alright!!!! Great to see you posting, saw your materials post too.

Yeah......I figured what the heck, let me pull out my Cross Cut saw, and get into it a bit. Well that lasted about 3 minutes and reached for POWER!!!! It was kinda funny though, I was looking for form...bent over, ass sticking out, elbow correctly positioned, then I just lost it to "man I wanna get this done". I'm just plain going to have fun with this.

I see you are going to go MTV on us...unplugged!!!

power schmower!

04/04/2008 04:32 AM romessina

Hi Neil,

I really enjoyed your post on Mollino,
Wendell and T-Chisel!

It doesn't matter if we go power or elbow grease,
we should all just have fun and learn a lot from
big-T (and the other knowledgeable guys)!!

I have no other power tools than a jigsaw and a
lathe, so I can only go unplugged
and listen to some music while chop -chopping,
without all the power generated noise, ha ha! ;)

Wow, great discussion!

I'm loving all the posts, guys. Sorry I've been away a bit, things got really busy at school of a couple of days. To answer your question Rob, that was my mistake. You actually only need 2 runners and 2 kickers, (although they are the same dimensions. Also, I ususally rough dimension everything and then let it sit until I need it. Some of the parts are fit to your actual table, the stock list is just theoretical.

But, don't worry if you've already milled things all the way down. None of these pieces are terribly large and the runners and what not don't have to fit perfectly to work perfectly.

Also, yes, the doublers a.k.a guides a.k.a side runners, etc. go on the inside of the rails to build them out flush with the legs ("doubling" their thickness).

Oh, and those dovetails are fantastic! They look flawless. Great job!

Lot's of typos in that last one. It's just all the excitement getting to me. And rough cutting by hand?! That's hardcore.
