fieldstone flooring

My husband and I are planning to build a log home. We have Plenty of fieldstone on our property. There are also several long old stone farm fences throughout the woods. We have a barn up now and I have gathered hundreds of stones to decorate around it, fence and walkway stones. Question, Is it possible to use this for the kitchen flooring? I know it would have to be even and flat. Is there a process of sealing it, waterproofing? Is it easy to take care of, durable etc? This would be a beautiful floor. Thanks for any leads that anyone may provide.

Is the idea to have it look like a slate floor? There would have to be fairly large grout joints due to the irregular sizing of the stones. Uniform thickness, or lack thereof, would be my major concern. If you have the patience to deal with laying out a jigsaw puzzle on your floor I guess it could be done. Best to consult a mason as to exactly what kind of mortar should be used in setting the stones. Also have your architect verify that the weight of this can be handled by the floor joists and support beams under the floor.
