More information...

** front loading kenmore washer **

I'm afraid that is not enough information to identify the appliance in question. What is needed is its exact model number.

You can find tips for locating the model and serial number identification tag on your appliances at the following link:

** washer fills up and drains okay, but will not turn the drum **

The main motor is usually only responsible for turning the tub, the rest of the functions are separately controlled. If only the things not functioning are what the main motor is responsible for, looking into it and its control system may be necessary to isolate the cause.

the model # is 417-4005-2990.
so far it seems to have power going to the motor, I do hear a buzzing sound when I tried to check it out. However, I only got it to spin two times on the "heavy wash" setting, it will not spin on the other settings. And later I tried it again on heavy wash and it would not spin on that either. How do I know for sure if it is the motor? What else might it be?

Motor?

** [kenmore front loading washer] model 417.40052990 **

That machine was built for Sears by Frigidaire.

** it seems to have power going to the motor, I do hear a buzzing sound when I tried to check it out. **

If the motor is getting power but not running, it may be defective.

** How do I know for sure if it is the motor? **

On those models it is often difficult to pinpoint the exact cause of motor problems with certainty. Often a component is just assumed to be bad if everything else checks out.

** What else might it be? **

I can't think of anything besides the motor if it IS definitely getting power. If the motor wasn't getting power, a problem in the motor control circuit board, timer or wiring might be possibilities.

Front loading washers are often difficult to diagnose. If you want to attempt to repair it yourself, the service manual for the Frigidaire equivalent of your machine might be helpful?
