garage door opener malfunction :(

01/24/2006 10:50 PM dhambly840

anyone have any helpful hints as to why a garage door would only shut now if you use the button in the garage (the remote doesnt cut it when trying to close, but will open door) and it only stays shut if you stop it by hitting the button twice. there is an odd clicking sound when its open too.

GDO Obstructions

You did not indicate what type, brand, or age of the opener so it is a little hard to give much detailed information.

Sounds like it is stopping for an "obstruction".

That obstruction could be something that is moving with the door and it is falling in front of the photocells.

Also GDO's have an overforce stop/reverse that that is designed to trigger if the door is too hard to close - mechanical obstruction.

Disconnect the operator and see if the door works smoothly and is balanced when opeerated by hand. If not get the door adjusted/repaired.

Run the opener will it is disconnected. Does it operate OK or is there any kind of binding. Does it need lubricating?

If t he door is OK and you don't see any problem with the opener then the close force on the opener is too low and needs to be adjusted.

Get the manual for details.

The clicking might be indication of something binding. But it might be the relay for the light. Does the light work?

On some units the light will flash a trouble code which indicates what the problem is.
