Neil, did you try to cut to length with a cross-cut saw? (or it's my poor English and I totally missed the sense of the phrase?!?!)
personally, I really enjoy working by hand, but after resawing a 10x18x1 board by hand... my next investment is surely a bandsaw! (took me more than 4h to do it with a ryoba; I was really proud and my shoulders kept reminding me about it for a whole week)
Old masters would have used power (except the masochists :p)
It's nice that now we have a choice!
and as soon as things are sorted out around here, I will pledge to do mine (unplugged, of course ;).
