I live just outside of Houston near Galveston Bay where we have a gumbo clay soil. I am looking at residing, and was told by one contractor that the weight of hardiplank can lead to foundation problems as the soil will have problems bearing the weight over time.

Is anyone familiar with such a condition?

Hardiplank is a heavy product when compared to other siding. But is it heavier than brick? Obviously not. Are there homes in you area with brick veneer? Most likely. It would be very unlikely that the weight of the siding you choose would affect your foundation unless your foundation is substandard.

If you are still unsure the best course is to consult a geological (or soils) engineer. They will know the bearing capacity of the soil and can give you some expert advice. The engineers are not by any means inexpensive so you must decide how unsure you feel about you soil and the condition of your foundation.
