Stripping simply removes the varnish (or polyurethane) from the floor surface in preparation for a new coat of varnish. Once the old varnish is removed some, but not all, stains may be removed from the natural wood before the new varnish is applied. Dents, scratches, or cupped boards are not repaired with this process. This process is laborious, but most homeowners can do it thenselves. Although not recommended, this can be done one room at a time.
Sanding actually removes the varnish and a little of the wood surface. This process is best if the floor has dents, scratches, cupped boards, or if needs to be stained before the new varnish is applied. Deeper stains may be removed (depending upon the depth of wood penetration). When sanding, the shoe molding must be taken up (and replaced or reinstalled). The whole house must be done at one time and the furniture must be removed. Without the proper equipment and skill, this is a very difficult job.
