Our house was built in 1948-49 with homemade built-in wood cabinets. There are two large drawers with metal linings. The metal is black, very thin and saudered at the corner seams. It is nailed around the top to the wood drawer. We are concerned that it may be lead.

Typically they are tin, but the solder would be lead based so... if you have kids and you find the solder loose that's not the best scenario. Keep the kids away until you can get it repaired.

My opinion is if you even question it, replace it.

Try to remove it carefully, get rid of any debris left in the cab. If you have questions and it looks really bad, call the local EPA http://www.epa.gov/lead/ we wouldn't want you taking any chances.

To replace it, call your local HVAC contractor they will bend a new replacement for you. They can do a solderless joint similar to ducts. Easier for them if they can use the old ones as templates.

It would be ideal but difficult to find a plastic bin to fit those old cabs, if you were thinking of using it as a four bin still?
