hot face plate on dimmer switch

01/14/2000 09:23 PM deedee3281

I noticed the face plate on my dining room dimmer switch is getting very warm; especially when the light is dimmed to low. Is this normal or should I be looking for the cause?

Thanks

Dear Dee Dee:
A little heat is not uncommon.
Have you recently relamped the fixtures that are controlled by this dimmer? You may have put in lamps that exceed the wattage rating of the dimmer? Most dimmers are only rated for 600 watts.
Check and see what the combined wattage and then replace with lower wattage lamps if needed.
