We're renovating the kitchen. I can handle just about anything, but I haven't a clue when it comes to ventilation. We'll have a new 600cfm vent hood, and I'll be installing the 7" round aluminum vent pipe this weekend. At the exterior of the house, I'm guessing that I'll install the standard aluminum wall cap with bird screen and "damper". My experience with dryers is that these exterior "dampers" don't close well, and a 7" pipe will be an excellent entrance for winter winds into the house. The vent hood does not have a built in damper.

So my question is, what are your recommendations for an in-line damper? The line will be 7" round aluminum, and I'll really have limited space for installation, but will look into any suggestions. I looked briefly at the in-line contraptions at Home Depot, but they really looked fairly Mickey Mouse and didn't give me a warm and fuzzy feeling about keeping the cold out. At this point, I'll look at anything, gravity operated or power.

Broan has a 7 inch spring-loaded in-line damper, stock # 97. Check at L-o-w-e-s or H-o-m-e D-e-p-o-t and they should be able to special order one if not in stock
