We have lived in our house for about four years. Previous owner had made modifications and extensions to the original house. Plans for these modifications had been authorized by our county's permit services, so we thought all was okay. But now as we look to make some of our own changes, we are finding what looks like code violations in the work they did. We looked into the matter and it appears there is no record of final inspection of work done by the previous owner. Is the previous owner liable for these code violations or am I on my own now? thanks....... |

State laws on this will vary somewhat as to the amount of time that you can go back on a problem like this.
But there are also some other problems with trying to do this.
Codes change from time to time so it might have been to code at the time. Also, depending on where and what part of the house it is, it might be hard to show that this is work that they did and is not even older work.
