i have a 110.60922990 dryer. it heats up in about 5-15 intervals...shutting itself off automatically. it gets hot just fine, and smells as if something is too hot. the removable lint trap is fine, and it appears that the hot air exhaust line that goes outside isn't clogged either. any suggestions???
my background...i've never worked on appliances, but i feel more than comfortable taking the cover off and getting my hands dirty, as long as someone can guide me.

** dryer heats up in about 5-15 intervals... shutting itself off automatically. **
What "shuts off", the heat or the whole dryer??
** smells as if something is too hot. **
Maybe it is. The most common cause for a dryer overheating is a plugged and/or poorly installed dryer vent (see the following link).
- How long can my dryer vent be?

It could also be caused by a problem in the dryer's blower fan or the drum not sealing properly which would affect air flow through the dryer.
If the dryer is heating even when the motor is not running, the element could be shorted to ground.
** it appears that the hot air exhaust [vent] that goes outside isn't clogged either. **
Isn't clogged *at all*? How do you know??
** any suggestions? **
Try running a cycle with the vent totally removed from the dryer. If the problem gets better or goes away, you can be certain the dryer vent is (at least part of) the problem.
