I want to get my brother a kit to make a wood plane if such a thing is available. does anyone know of such a thing. If not, can someone give me info a the best place to search to find a nice fancyish, antique-ish wood plane?
Please email responses if possible
thanks

Hi kelicraig,
I have run across a number of old wood planes in antique shops but have not seen any kits for making them.Since there are different planes for different chores, and at one time these were made by woodworkers, there must be books available. My guess is that if you could find a kit,it may only include a block of maple, oak,or other hard wood, and a piece of flat metal stock.

Several years ago Wood Magazine ran an article on making one. I don't know the issue number but you can try their site.

Check their forums - they have several hundred thousand subscribers. If the plans are available, someone there will know of them. Just go to Wood Talk.
