Hi,
**Model Nr. SAV515DEWW**
An Amana built washer with a Maytag name on it.
**Water flows in OK but the tub can't hold water. The drain is stuck open. Is that a solenoid valve?**
Water comes in and goes down the drain at the same time?
With or without the motor running?
No solenoid valve for the drain.
If without, probably the water is syphoning out.

There is not usually any sort of drain valve on most clothes. The main washer motor turns one direction for wash and the opposite way for drain and spin. The pump is only capable of pumping when it turns in the right direction which is when the motor is turning in the spin direction.
If water drains out of the tub during the agitate phase of a cycle or when the machine is not running at all, I agree with Jeff that improper drain hose installation (see the following link) is a likely cause.
- My washer doesn't seem to be able to hold water. What's the problem?

washer wouldn't hold water (but now it will) |

Thanks, guys. Turns out that there's only 28" vertical from the washer outlet to the drain pipe inlet. Ironically, the washer worked fine for years and suddenly one day (Friday) it wouldn't hold water. Now (Sunday) it's holding water again. Must be a washer on the edge. Thanks for your attention to this matter. |

That can happen. I've seen incorrectly installed appliances work Ok for years only to develop problems later on. It makes it hard for customers to believe the installation is the cause... even when correcting the installation fixes the problem. :/

I doubt the washer itself has anything to do with your problem. Maybe the air gap for the drain hose just got sealed into the standpipe temporarily by foam from a previous drain?

A tad too low.

Odd problems like reverse polarity can work for years before giving us a problem.
I'm with Dan, correct the install now should give you less problems later on :)
