need baseboard heating "fins" on bare pipe |

Here's an interesting question ...I have about 10 feet of baseboard pipe in my bedroom that doesn't have any fins on it. So basically, I don;t get heat from that section of pipe. Does anyone make any "clip-on" fins? or does anyone know how to "jury-rig" fins? I really don;t want to crack open the system and replace that length of pipe, especially in the winter. |

No, you'll have to install new fintube in place of the pipe.

I have Santa Fin system with only fins on 5 feet of a 20 foot run. Why was this done? Where can I find a snap on fin kit? |

Why is there only 5 feet of fin on 20 feet of pipe? |

It was done because someone figured that you needed 5 feet of heat instead of 20 feet of heat. As each foot of baseboard gives about 600 btuh of heat when the water is at 180F in the coldest part of the year, the difference is 5 times 600 = 3000 btuh for the room, or 20 x 600 or 12,000 btuh for the room. As a newly built home needs about 25 btuh per sq foot -
5 ft of baseboard would be required in a room of 3000 divided by 25 = a 120 sq ft room or a
10 x 12 room
20 feet of baseboard would be for a 12,000 divided by 25 = 480 or a
14 x 20 room
putting 20 feet of baseboard in a 10 x 12 room would make it a sauna.
IOW - putting as much fin as can fit in an exposed length of pipe JUST BECAUSE YOU CAN isn't a good plan.

Planning ahead by having an accurate heat estimate for the room and installing the PROPER length of finned tubing to provide the required heat without freezing or overheating you makes more sense.

It is a 12X12 room with a cathedral cieling and skylight. It also gets very liitle sun light. This room is on the second floor and is the first room on the run.
Seems like 20ft of fin is too much but 5 more feet may do the trick. Any idea if you can buy fins and attach them to the existing piping? |

Steps to heat |

Do a heat estimate of the room and put in new finned tube to the length = the heat estimate for the room divided by 600. Then you'll have enough heat. There are NO clamp-on fins.

Mystery situation |

You don't know if the situation you are in is from not having enough water flow through the fins you have due to air bubbles or a clog, or closed valve, or if there really aren't enough fins. It is very rare that an installer won't put enough fin in the room based on a heat estimate need. It is more likely they will throw in the same lengths to buy.
As a check, do the heat estimate to know how many feet you need.
