Cost was one reason that I decided to create/invent hanging beds in the first place. Regular bunk beds were $400+ just for the frame.

Each hanging bed cost approximately $60 for the wood and hardware. The largest portion of this was the 3/4" plywood, which sells for approximately $35 for one sheet. I had the plywood trimmed at the lumber store (free!) and used the excess for the rails.

I was thinking of doing a loft for my boys (9 and 6) then found this post about hanging beds...and that was all I had to see. I set out figuring out how to make my own beds and then realized with a little tweaking, I could use their existing bunk beds. After all, we were trying to do this room make-over for as little $ as possible. The only lumber I had to buy was 3x1"diameter dowels I used to make the ladder. Yeah, I ended up with some pieces of wood that had unused holes from existing hardware (like on the side rails if you look closely) but it all came together very well, considering I was using the wood from a set of bunks. It took about 6 hours and I needed an extra set of hands only a few times. I followed the others in using 3.5" screws to attached 2 sides to the wall and used 1/8" coated wire for the hanging portion. Everything else is pretty simple. I think I spent around $50, which isn't too bad.

nice work on the bunk bed conversion project! that took some guts to cut apart the existing furniture, but the result and the look on your kids face are worth it.

I love this idea my boys room is barely big enough for them and I am planning on this for a weekend project. I can't wait to get it done. My question is about your mattress. Is it just the mattress or do you have the box springs on the hanging platform also?

Just a quick note to say, "THANK YOU" for a great idea. I have foster/adopted kids and my girls and I were looking for a way to fit in one more bed in their room and this matches our idea perfectly! Thank you for solving the problem of how to safely secure it off to the ceiling.

I used only the mattress without the box spring. The mattress should have enough support from the plywood alone.
