Hello: I'm exploring what's available for venting a gas range on an island. I could do a down draft but don't know how that could be as effective as one overhead. I'm wondering what people's thoughts are on such and also whether anyone knows of top vents, not wall mounted for less than $1200 which is what I've found so far. Thanks for any suggestions.

Downdrafts work reasonably well if installed properly (short vent run, few elbows, etc.) except for cooking with tall pots where the escaping steam may be too far from the vent for it to be effective. You can see various models available at the following link:

I would suggest a Jenn Air slide in for the island with the down draft built in as long as you have access under the floor to run the ducting. The maximum run for the venting is 60' of 6" duct. You would use HVAC pipe, and not dryer vent for this, and also an approved outdoor vent cap. This way you dont have to worry about supporting a hood from above or cutting holes in the ceiling and roof for the vent. You can get a very good unit for around $1900-$2200 with all the options depending on if its gas or electric. Also Jenn-Air sounds good when you go to sell the house, it adds to the realtor listing. It may not add to the value of the house, but does make a good selling point.
