removing an old light fixture - what to do with the wiring

12/11/2007 01:05 PM bikegal2000

Hi, I want to remove some old light fixtures in my garage. They will not be replaced. What do I safely do with the old wiring? The ceiling has drywall.

Thanks,
Patrice

If the wiring was in boxes, the easiest thing to do is just to put wire nuts on the ends of the wires, coil them back up into the box, and put a blank cover plate over the box. Then the wiring is safe & out of sight, but available if you ever decide to install a new light fixture there.

Note that the boxes can NOT be hidden behind the drywall. You must leave the cover plate accessible (but you can paint it to blend in).

Thanks, that sounds easy enough an amateur like me can do it. I'll give it a shot.
