Salamander ?...that's more of a water critter
Sand hills .....huh......How large ...Tall ?
Small ridges winding thru the yard?
Maybe Mole Crickets......Kinda like a ground-burrowing-jumbo-shrimp....you'll find dead ones around concrete slabs where they die
Not an Ant hill ?...we've got quite the collection of ants in florida....but you would see their activity......
Small hills next to 1" diameter hole...4-6" deep?......possum, raccoon or armadillo......all looking for food
We've got both a baby possum and a fat raccoon that climb a vine and enter our cat door to feast on the dry cat food inside the back porch IN DOWNTOWN......Urban Wildlife !

but I am not an expert.
They look for bugs and such in your yard. Have you tried filling the hole with a bucket of water and seeing if anything comes out of the hole. |
