We have recently built a new house in the country with a septic system. We can smell sewer gas outside the house. I am sure the smell is coming from the vent pipe. Unfortunately, we can smell it on the deck at the back of the house if the wind is out of the south or on the front porch if the wind is from the north. Will putting an attachment on the vent pipe to raise its height allow for the gas to vent higher and thus not be smelled around the house? Any other solutions?

You should also verify there are no wet spots in the drain field. If your system is a low pressure system, it happens. It might not be the vent at all.

I have come across the same problem (stong sewer gas smell around the outside of house and in flower beds) being created by having the weeping tile tied directly into the main sewer line exiting the house. Adding a p-trap between the weeping tile and main sewer will stop this, if it applies.

Located on the roof top of every house is a "stink pipe." This plumbing vent allows the plumbing gases to vent to the outside atmosphere. Roofers often throw a rag over the vent when they work around it. When the wind blows just right these plumbing gases come down to your nose level.

Activated charcoal vent filters are required by law in some communities and can be installed on any cold air "stink pipe."

I totally agree a trap is the best way to go and I would use a running type of trap with Two clean outs and a fresh air inlet installed and the Vent through the roof should be 4" diameter with NO Devices connected to it
