shingle roof leak

11/21/2000 09:31 PM frenchpa

I used to have a house with flat roof. if and when I got a leak I just used tar and associated materials. now I just bought a house with a slent shingle roof. there is two coats of shingle. and a leak into the garage that seems to also make its way into my living room. apparently the leak is located into a galley.how do you figure out where the leak is? and how do you repair it?
clearly I could call a roofer and have it repaired or have a new roof installed but I don't think that I can afford it.
thank for any advice.paul

If you are comfortable climbing onto the roof, a place to start is to look for missing or broken shingles. You might find some that are cracked down the middle. There are sealing products that will help with this problem. Also, look at all rubber boots around pipes that go up through the roof. They get old, cracked, and don't seal any more. You should seal around them as well.
A recent post here said don't use silicone caulk on shingles - so buy a product made for roofing.
