shooting boards for fan

04/28/2008 08:08 AM robphill33

Hey T-Mac,

Using the shooting boards for the fan is one of the best tips of this project. With them I was able to get the centre of the fan perfect, Im so happy! For everyone who hasn't made the fan yet make sure you make these shooting boards, they only take a sec to make. Thanks T, the new episodes are great.

oval

Some experiences doing the oval

Cutting the angle pieces- I decided to use my starret angle attachment to cut the pieces of the oval using 15, 16, 17, 20, 22 degress as the angles (these add up to 90 and so I thought it was close enough. Eli you should be able to figure out the exact angles). MAKE THE SHOOTING BOARD it is reproducible and you can tweak the angle if necessary by adding tape to the fence or shooting board face or taking 2 minutes to make a new one.

Drawing the oval- I did it the same way Tommy did it but found the carverscompanion.com vol 2 issue 4 very helpful in explaining how to do it using a ruler.

Shading- I found shading the pieces after the shooting gave me much better control over the color then shading first the shooting. I think this is an IMPORTANT STEP and I think the way Tommy does it.

Veneering tape- I wasn't sure on the best way of doing this. The water caused the pieces to bend and I didn't know if making a "sheet" of veneer was better then trying to tape individual pieces together.

I am going to open my halves that I put on a backer after I finish this note. Hopefully shouts of joy as opposed to cursing.

Bottom line- make a good oval and learn the process. This was my first time ever doing anything like this so my PERFECT ONE can always be on my next project.
