should cement slab for new home crack?

05/24/2008 03:13 PM sergiocampos

i am currently having a new home built, i went to the construction site after the cement had been pured a day or two prior. i noticed cracks in the garage cement slab and at other areas around the foundation. Is it normal or common for cement to crack so soon? the builder said it was normal for cement to crack due to settling.

concrete will crack as it conforms to stress (tension, compression, early loading, unsuitable base, any # of reasons),,, the main reason we cut/form joints is to CONTROL the cracking to where WE want,,, in the posters situation, i'd bet the conc wasn't cut properly &, as a result, random cracking occurred,,, whether its detrimental to the floor performance's another issue as is repair methods.

ps - my garage floor's crk'd as is the bsmt floor :-( but those guys got pd & they're gone 28yrs ago
