smelly drain

04/20/2004 01:01 PM

The drain in my shower stall is emitting a nauseus mildewy odor recently. I've dumped in drain cleaner, Lysol Cleaner, Baking Soda,Clorox...nothing is working. The drain is not clogged or slow, and it's the only drain in the house with this problem. How can i get rid of this odor?

Dumping and mixing chemicals ESPECIALLY CHLORINE BLEACH may be hazardous period. Showers are infamous for mold and mildew. The 1st thing you want to make sure of is the trap seal. This seal is just water in the p or s trap. It prevents sewer gas and vermin. If at all possible, inspect the trap. Showers are usually tough to gain access to. For your and your families safety STOP mixing chemicals immediately! Commom sense plays a major role here Steve, so if your still unsure about what to do, please call in a professional, licensed master plumber to evaluate your situation. Yes, you will have to pay to find out what's wrong, but it's worth it!

Thanks, Tom. Just so you don't think I'm an idiot, I haven't mixed these chemicals. They were used separately and well apart.

Smelly Drain

I have the same problem. Sounds easy to "just check the trap," but where can the trap be found? How does one get to it?

Thanks much!

trap

The easiest way to "check" your trap is to simply shine a light down the drain...there should be standing water...if the trap is damaged or leaking water the trap will be dry, allowing odors into the room. Its almost always something else causing the odor. Many people here will assume its the "vent" which is hardly ever the case. erik

I also have the same problem. My trap is fine... but it looks like there is mold down in the trap. I also put some bleach down the drain to try to kill it, and it seemed to help, but it is back. It is quite an odor. I actuallyu have two that are a problem, one under a tub, and one unbder a ceramioc tile shower stall. Any ideas? Buth have water in them.
