I need to purchase a basic set of sockets for basic auto maint. Do I need to buy more than just a set of 3/8 drive sockets?

Do I need both metric and SAE? I figured I should be fine with just SAE on most accounts.

i would recommend getting a set that covers both metric and sae sizes...your best bet would be to go to home depot and buy a husky socket set which has a lifetime warranty for which you will spend between $40-100 depending on which set you choose...plus they have quite a few promos running for christmas

Most cars nowadays have both metric and sae fasteners. You should get a set that has both. I wouls suggest a set with all 3 sizes of ratchets because the right tool is needed for the job. A 1/2" ratchet will break the really tight bolts better than a 3/8" ratchet. As for brand, you can't go wrong with Craftsman. The quality is wonderful and if it breaks the are guaranteed forever. The cost a little more than the cheap ones but with hand tools you get what you pay for. spend a little more for quality and you will not be dissapointed. Spend your money now on a larger set and you wont have to run to the store in the middle of a job.

I agree, you can't go wrong with craftsman. They don't make the best stationary power tools, but their handtools are still among the best.

Craftsman usually has a 76+ piece mechanics set for less than $90. I got a 76 piece set for $40 when it was on sale. I use it quite frequently for automotive applications. It has 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 drive metric and standard. I know my truck uses both metric and standard.

One other good thing is if you break it no questions asked they replace them. I went to use my 1/2 drive for the first time and the socket wouldnt attach it was broken. Took it in and they replaced it. Great service.
