We are respectfully writing as a request for information on Shoji Screen repair.

We have a sliding glass door at one of our homes that has a custom interior frame and Shoji sreen sliders. The redwood frame and lattice work is beautifully intact, but the rice paper has suffered damage.

If anyone has information on ordering materials that will be wide enough to cover the full width of a sliding door panel, and more specifically on repair/replacement techniques, please let us know!

We have only been successful at finding 18 inch wide papers thus far, and have had difficulty finding someone local to repair the doors. [The unit was imported from Japan.]

As it is important to keep these beautiful doors in place for sentimental value, as well as to preserve the aesthetic between the room and the entrance to the Japanese garden, your help in this quest for information is greatly appreciated.

Hello from amazingkae!

We have been able to find help with the paper replacement for the shoji screens at our home. As our frames are intact, the paper must simply be removed and replaced using fairly simple tools. It is such a relief to know how to restore these doors!

We were able to find large rice paper replacement rolls shortly after the last post, and are currently waiting on "rice glue" (as opposed to wallpaper glue which is also a viable option). I was delighted to find that the doors came easily apart to make this repair, though they appear more substantial.

If you are considering Shoji Screen coverings, I recommend a trip to the local library or bookstore. Chosing several editions of old magazines or books on the history and tradition of creating Shoji should prove very helpful for the handymen in your home. In addition, there are several companies doing custom work, though you must have very specific measurements and be prepared to have them ship the items home.

We have a problem with our beautiful shoji screens as well. Seems over the years the sun has burned the existing fiberglass fabric and we now need to replace this with a polyethylene type screen for durability (or if you have a better suggestion, we are open!) WE have a huge investment in these screens and want to keep them looking good-of course the burn is in the front of the house in full view :(
We do not want rice paper which is available and we don't want to have to pay a fortune-which seems to be the case-we need to buy this stuff in large sheets to do the job ourselves. Help anyone out there?

As for product, look for the double strong paper. It seems to work the best. In addition, this particular company also sells Shoji paste. Their shipping is very prompt and their products seem to be reliable.

Finding sites to work with on the internet is sometimes difficult. I usually try to work with sites I trust; my dealings with this company have gone well, and I will be buying items from them again.
