spray painting. to strip or not to strip

11/14/2008 11:08 AM sailor86

I am wanting to repaint a small metal file cabinet. It has quite a bit of paint loss on top but well-covered the rest. I know I must use primer first, but how necessary is it to strip the old coating first? I'm planning on using Krylon indoor/outdoor Burgundy Gloss on an indoor item. If so, what brands of primer and/or stripper do I use?

Just remember that your paint job is only as good as the one you are going over. So if there is peeling paint now it may peel again and take what you apply with it.

Removing all the failing coating will be the best way to do it and there are a mulitude of removers on the market and I like the solvent based ones as I have not had good luck with so called safe removers. Or you could just scrape and sand to remove as much of the existing coating as possible.

As far as the primer you will want to use a Krylon primer if you are going use a Krylon topcoat as that way you know there will not be a compatability issue.

Hope this helps out.

Yes I went for the Krylon grey primer. Best feature: dry time. Less than 5 minutes and it was powder dry. Did the entire project in about half an hour. No sweat. Thanks. Now...what to paint next?
