I have been using Citristrip to remove paint and varnish from the windowsills, doorframes, and baseboards in my dining room. We bought the house 15 years ago and the house is 90 years old, but only the past 25 years has someone put paint on all the woodwork hiding very good wood stained a medium walnut. My problem is once I get to the old varnish over the stain (the paint scrapes right off)the Citristrip and varnish gums (for lack of a better word) up and is very, very hard to remove. I have done most of it with a lot of elbow grease (trip to the doctor for tendinitis in elbow)and it does look beautiful for what I have gotten done. Is there anything else such as lacquer thinner or sanding that can get this varnish off without a lot of elbow grease? I want to tackle our stairway next if I can figure out a way to get the varnish off without another trip to the doctor for tendinitis. Would appreciate your help!! Thanks!!
