I would add a sheet of 3/4" BC or AC grade of plywood (no CDX, it carries only a sheathing rating, not an underlayment rating).
That still may not be all that is needed if the joists are undersized, but I cant imagine they would be if they previously supported a mud bed. You'll have to determine if the joists are adequate. If they are then the 3/4"ly plus a 1/4" cement board should be sufficient.
