wall plugs and circuit breakers

11/20/2007 09:45 PM cooltj

I tested my wall plugs and found they were dead. I would like to check the breaker but I don't know which breaker they are on . My question is how can I check the breakers with out shutting the entire house down, if possible

troubleshooting

first I would check the recepticle with a recepticle tester, the kind you plug in that has three lights on it, they can tell you if you have lost power, neutral, ground or reverse polarity, the chart is usually right on the tester. if you have no power, then I would go to the breaker panel and visually look for a tripped breaker, sometimes you cannot always tell by looking so feel each breaker and if any feels springy or differnt than the others, turn it all the way off, then back on. If you still cannot locate a tripped breaker, you would need to open panel cover, and use a voltage meter set and put one lead on the neutral buss and the other touch to each breaker terminal screw and check for voltage, if you find a dead breaker, turn it all the way off then back on, if that doesnt reset it, it needs replaced, if you still dont find any problems there, then you will have to start opening recepticles, switches and junction boxes through the house and inpect for loose or burnt connections....
