I am not sure about the fastening questions but i do know that you need to use a setting type of compound for your joints and others areas. It is called DuraBond and comes in 90 all the way down to 5 minute setting times.

Once you have finished the drywall you will need to prime it with an acrylic undercoater/primer and the finish should be a satin or eggshell acrylic to stand up to the moisture.
