water repellent or linseed oil on bare clapboard?

07/07/2001 09:22 AM Tmac

The clapboard on my 200 year old house is very dry and weathered. One magazine suggests using a paintable water repellent before prime coat, another suggests diluted linseed oil. Which to use?
