what is involved in becoming an appraiser

03/20/2004 04:21 PM arlene211

I am interested and have been interested in this line of work. Could someone maybe explain to me what is involved education wise? And perhaps some details, I remember reading something here but cannot find it. Thanks, Arlene

Appraiser

Hello again Arlene,

So, you wanna go through OTHER peoples' closets now? Only kidding!

But seriously, about 10 years ago my wife and I both expressed interest in real estate appraisal. We learned enough to know that we probably really weren't that interested after all.

There is education, but more and more, the work is computerized...that's right: databases. Theoretically, it's not really all THAT necessary to pay appraisers to even go TO (much less INTO) homes anymore. Most house statistics, neighborhoods, recent comparable sales, etc are all in databases. So home appraisal fees were dropping.

I welcome feedback from others, including appraisers; that's what this forum is for. But in our case, we were turned off by the increasingly cut-throat nature of that profession--like most others, or so it seems.

This is just our personal experience. I certainly don't wish to discourage you--I think that the best thing is do what you LOVE to do and try to make money at it.

Good luck, whatever you decide!
Best regards,
