There are two factors to consider with speaker selection: sound and asthetics. Choosing these speakers will require shopping and demonstrations at all of the audio stores in your area. The hardest choice will be with appearance. You do not want something ugly, yet you also do not want something that is highly noticeable when you enter the room.
As for the wiring- the farther away the speaker is from the source of the sound, the more the quality of the sound decreases. To compensate for this thicker wire is used (this all deals with electrical resistance). It is not uncommon to use 12awg speaker wire for runs exceeding 25 feet. When you spend alot of money for sound systems, do not become thrifty when it comes to the wire price. I hope this helps and HAVE FUN!!!!
