Bob and contractor Tim Berky look at the new foundation for the mudroom and kitchen addition to the Rowley Victorian. The sill of the former entry was rotted, so Berky removed the entry space and tied the new foundation into the existing one. Since the existing foundation was neither level nor square, the mason cut a small, sloping course along the top and repointed to blend the old and new into a level seat for the new addition. The 5-foot by 16-foot mudroom has a hip roof with a shallow pitch that will be finished in copper. Berky walks Bob through the construction of the hip roof starting with hips that are cut on a 45-degree angle, hip jacks, and common rafters. Berky and his crew create an opening for the 6-foot wide Pella French doors using a laminated structural header to head off the weight above and transfer it to side members. They use Pella’s butyl tape to seat the doors, which have a triple-latch system built into the top, center, and bottom for added security. They are double-paned, argon-filled, low-e glass doors made of solid wood with architectural wood panes for a classic look
